Action for East Palo Alto's Streets - July 9, 2008

The Youth Leaders of Our Community (YLOOC), a Peninsula Interfaith Action youth group, is working hard to get sidewalks on every street in East Palo Alto. The group is launching its first "action" at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in East Palo Alto to bring the goal of sidewalks to fruition. Battling Childhood Diseases

Nearly one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Even more alarming is that childhood obesity is associated with Type II diabetes, increases the risk of coronary heart disease, lowers self-esteem, and affects relationships with peers. "Bare Witness"

A pictorial exhibit featuring the late Gordon Parks will be displayed at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University starting March 21. Parks who died in 2006 at the age of 93 has been described as a unique renaissance man since he was a filmmaker, author, musician, and publisher. Quest Learning Center Spelling Bee

The San Mateo County Library's Quest Learning Center, located in the East Palo Alto Library, is hosting a spelling bee for Quest students on Thursday, February 15th, 2007. The event will take place from 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Community Room, which is located across the hall from the East Palo Alto Library. The spelling bee is intended for 3rd through 9th grade students who are enrolled in the Quest after school program.

In order to make sure students learn new information that is relevant to them, the words chosen for the spelling bee are among the 1,000 most frequent words in texts from Grade 3 to 9. For more information about this event please contact Darwin Eustaquio at (650) 321-7712 x226.
